Hi! I am looking for book ideas for my youngest nephew. He is turning 5 this month, is super excited to be playing t-ball and swimming on the swim team for the first time, loves squirmy animals but also fairy tales, and lives in New Orleans. Any ideas?
The books below are great for reading to a 5-year-old, but also have captivating illustrations that will encourage him to look through the books on his own. Here is what I came up with for this active 5 year old boy from New Orleans:
The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Jerry Pinkney and The True Story of The Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka are perfect for fans of fairy tales. Both of these books feature fairy tales with a twist!
Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is perfect for any animal lover, and is widely circulated in the library. This is a non fiction picture book that, you guessed it, illustrates the actual size of different animals. You really can’t go wrong with anything by Jenkins!
Take Me Out to the Yakyu by Aaron Meshon and Randy Riley’s Really Big Hit by Chris Van Dusen are great stories for the baseball lover! The first is beautifully illustrated and highlights the difference and similarities between baseball in America and Japan. Randy Riley and his plans are sure to make parents and children laugh.
