It is here! This year’s summer reading program at IndyPL has been announced. The theme this year is Read It & Eat, and the program runs from June 5th-July 29th. In line with the program’s theme, kids can donate non perishable food items to Gleaners Food Bank in return for up to 20 points towards  SRP prizes.

This year I had the pleasure of helping IndyPL’s own Janet Spaulding (Juvenile and Teen Collection Development) choose the year’s bonus books. I’d like to think I was asked to help because of my parent/teacher perspective, but it could have been that I was the only sucker to agree to read thirty kids books between October and March! Either way, we came up with some great choices, and they are some of the best books that I have read recently.

The bonus  books are worth 30 points a piece, and Janet spends a great deal of time choosing books for the list each year. It is important that there is something for everyone on the list, and a book or two that fit the year’s SRP theme. Ten new books are added to the list each year and the 10 oldest books fall off the list. Take a look at this year’s additions to the bonus books list:
